Decision question

The one-sentence formulation of what has to be decided, what it commits, by when, and what one refuses to decide at the same time. It is the product of the first step of the method, framing.

What it changes for the executive

Most bad decisions are good answers to a badly framed question. A question containing a proper name is about a person where it should be about a position; a question starting with "should we" closes the options where it should open them; a question without a deadline lets non-decision become the decision. Framing is what costs the least and changes the most.

Example

"Should X be replaced" is a bad question. "Who should hold the operations directorship for the next three years, and on what conditions" is a good one, because it opens the options instead of closing them.
