Sequencing
The order of the steps of a transformation, with the owner of each and the schedule of checkpoints, set so that each step is established before the next begins.
What it changes for the executive
Reorganisations almost never fail on paper; they fail midstream, when everything changes at once and nothing takes root. The right pace is neither the fastest nor the most cautious: it is the one that lets each step become established, and it is set at the start, not on the way. What is established is measured by what works without the executive attending to it.
Example
After an acquisition, unifying clients first, tools next, people last, or the reverse, is not a detail: it is the decision that determines whether the acquired company's managers are still there in a year.
